Search for a spare key

If you go this route, be sure to reward your landlord with a thoughtful gift or gesture of appreciation — it’s always best to stay on his good books.

Contact a close friend or family member

Even if they don’t have your spare key, they’ll likely let you crash for the night and help you deal with the lockout issue in the morning. Unfortunately, in some cases crashing with someone isn’t a viable option. Maybe you don’t have friends or family nearby, or perhaps you have a hungry pet at home that desperately needs your attention. In instances like this, a locksmith may be the way go.

Calling a 24-hour locksmith is an obvious solution to being locked out. They’ll likely have you back in your home in less than an hour. If time is of the essence, this is a great option, but it may come at a price.

Some 24-hour locksmiths will charge extra fees for work done after hours, while others don’t. Be sure to ask for a quote up front. Locksmiths typically charge based on the scope of work, so if you have a complex lock, the price may be higher.
